On December 11, 2025 at 18:25 Central European Time, Google launched the third major algorithm update of this year. The rollout is expected to last up to three weeks, roughly until the beginning of January 2026. The update is global, but based on experience from previous years, its impact in our region typically appears with a one to two week delay. So if you do not see any dramatic ranking changes yet, that is normal. Expect changes rather toward the end of December or the beginning of January. Simply a small holiday gift from Google.
This is the third major core update of this year:
- March 2025 (March 13–27) – 14 days
- June 2025 (June 30–July 17) – 16 days
- August 2025 – Spam update (not a core algorithm update)
At the beginning of 2024, Google promised more frequent core updates. The reality of 2025 looks different. Instead of the expected six to eight updates, we have seen only three confirmed ones. That does not mean nothing was happening.
A major documentation change two days before the announcement
On December 9, two days before the December update started, Google updated its official documentation on core updates. It added an important passage:
Between major announced updates, ongoing smaller algorithm changes take place. These changes are not announced because they are not widely noticeable. Websites can improve their rankings without waiting for another major update.
What this means: You do not have to wait half a year for another major update to see ranking improvements. If you genuinely improve your content, you may see results even between official announcements. That is nice, but it also means you cannot be sure whether last week’s drop was caused by a major update or just one of those smaller unannounced changes. Great for planning, right?
What Google officially says
Google used the standard wording it has used for the last few updates:
“This is a regular update designed to better surface relevant, satisfying content for searchers across all types of websites.”
No specific new guidance was provided. Google refers to its standard documentation on creating helpful content.
Ranking volatility: what tracking tools show
Tools tracking volatility in search results (Semrush Sensor, Sistrix, MozCast, Accuranker, Wincher, and others) recorded significant fluctuations:
- December 7–8 – a sharp spike even before the official announcement
- December 11–12 – confirmation of the rollout start
- Ongoing – higher volatility than during the November update
Many professionals reported unusual fluctuations weeks before the official announcement on December 3–4. This suggests Google was likely testing parts of the update or rolling out smaller changes to prepare the ground. These tools primarily track the US and Western European markets. Our data typically arrives with a delay.
Which industries are hit the hardest
Based on early analyses from the US and Western European markets:
Most affected sectors:
Ecommerce and product pages
- Product pages with manufacturer descriptions only
- Category pages serving only as filters without added value
- Affiliate sites without original product testing
- Lack of or low quality customer reviews
Healthcare and finance
- Health websites without clearly identified qualified authors
- Financial advice without proven expertise
- Generic content without specific experience
News and media
- Small news sites report significant drops (up to 75 percent within two days)
- Large publishers face competition from more authoritative sources
Who benefits:
Successful ecommerce sites:
- Detailed product testing with disclosed methodology
- Comprehensive buying guides demonstrating expertise
- Robust review systems with verified purchases
- Meaningful product comparisons
Successful content:
- Websites with clearly identified authors and qualifications
- Content with concrete examples and data, not generalities
- Regularly updated content with visible update dates
- First hand experience demonstrated through specific details
E-E-A-T remains in focus
The December update further strengthens the emphasis on experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness signals. Increased weight is given to visible last updated dates. Properly structured user generated content such as reviews and comments. Specificity instead of vague statements.
Artificial intelligence and generated content
Google does not penalize content because it was created using artificial intelligence. Google penalizes content that lacks specific experiential details that artificial intelligence typically cannot generate. This means that if you use artificial intelligence as a starting point and then thoroughly edit the text, add your own experience and concrete details, you are most likely fine. If you use artificial intelligence to scale content without adding real expertise, you are likely affected.
Ask yourself: Could this article have been written by someone without direct experience with the topic? If yes, add concrete details, data, and nuances that only an expert would know.
What to do if the update hit you
- First: wait for the rollout to complete. Google recommends waiting at least one week after the rollout finishes (that is until early January). Then compare that week with the week before the rollout started (before December 11).
- Classify the drop. Small drop (position 2 to 4): no reason for drastic action. It is hard to say whether this was even an update or just natural fluctuation.
- Large drop (position 4 to 29): time for a thorough analysis by an SEO specialist.
Audit existing content
Review your top twenty pages and honestly ask:
- Could this have been written by someone without direct experience?
- Are there concrete examples, data, and nuances?
- Is the author’s expertise clearly visible?
Update your About page with verifiable information
Real names, real qualifications, real professional history. LinkedIn profiles, portfolios.
Add time stamps
Visible publication date and last updated date. Author name with qualifications.
Add specific details
Bad: “Our product helps companies increase productivity.“
Good: “In a test with 847 users, we recorded an average productivity increase of 23 percent within the first 30 days of use. Specifically for tasks requiring team coordination, we saw a time reduction of 34 minutes per employee per day.“
Improve product pages
Instead of just a manufacturer description and five images, add:
- Original testing with methodology
- Usage video
- Buying guides for different use cases
- Verified customer reviews
- Comparison with alternatives including justification
Consolidate thin content
One comprehensive 3000 word article with solid structure covering a topic in depth is better than five thin 500 word articles with overlapping content.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to wait for the next core update for my rankings to recover?
No. Google has confirmed that smaller algorithm changes happen continuously. You may see changes even between major updates, but the biggest recoveries usually come with the next major update.
Is this a spam update?
No, December 2025 is a broad core update, not spam focused. The last spam update was in August 2025.
Does Google penalize AI generated content?
Google does not penalize content because it is created with artificial intelligence. It penalizes content that lacks concrete experiential details that artificial intelligence typically cannot produce.
How long will the rollout take?
Google stated “up to 3 weeks”, meaning until early January 2026. Previous updates lasted 14 to 19 days.
Why is the update in December during the holiday shopping season?
Google did not comment on the timing. For ecommerce sites, this is indeed the worst possible timing, but core updates do not respect business calendars. They never have.
I lost rankings, but my competitors did too. What does that mean?
A broad core update reevaluates the entire index. If everyone dropped, Google is likely promoting a different type of content or different websites for that query. Write to me at jsem@pavelungr.cz.
